Grand Hamad Stadium

The Grand Hamad Stadium sits in the New Slata district of Doha.

Opened in 1952, the ground has witnessed more than seven decades of sport in the Gulf. It has served as the home of Al-Arabi since the club was founded that same year, a tenure that has outlasted most of the city's development. The structure itself underwent a significant transformation in 2006, when it was renovated to host the Asian Games. That work increased the capacity to 13,000 and hosted football, rugby sevens, table tennis, and fencing. The stadium has also opened its doors to international fixtures out of necessity, hosting matches for Iraq and Yemen when their own domestic grounds were unavailable, and serving as a base camp for Brazil during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The architecture is functional rather than flamboyant. The pitch itself is natural grass, maintained to a deep green. The name "Grand Hamad" honours Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, though locals and visitors alike often refer to it simply as the Al-Arabi Stadium.
