Hala Sportowa Relax

The Hala Sportowa Relax sits on Aleje 3-go Maja 6B. The building was raised in the 1980s. It is a multi-purpose hall, so the layout is shaped by the demands of whichever sport has booked the space that day. For handball, which is the most consistent fixture, the lines are drawn for a 40-by-20-metre rectangle and the crowd is kept to 800 seats. The capacity swells to 1,000 when the hall hosts a concert, though those evenings are the exception rather than the rule.

Most weekends the Polish Superliga club MKS Piotrkowianin Piotrków Trybianin holds its practice sessions here. The team was founded in 1997, half a century after the hall itself was built, and they have played out of this same room ever since. The club does not command the biggest following in the region, but they keep their side in it week after week, and the local players who pass through the academy graduate here before moving on. The hall does not have a reputation for attracting large crowds, but the players who paid for a sloppy opening against away visitors know that the acoustics can amplify every shout from the bench.

The municipal sports centre, OSIR Piotrków Trybunalski, owns the building and has overseen its upkeep through the decades. There were plans in 2017 to modernise the facility, but the changes have been gradual rather than dramatic. The exterior remains largely unchanged, a functional block with few distinguishing features, which means the interior is where the character of the place is found. The wooden floor is kept in good condition for the handball matches, and the lighting is adequate for evening games throughout the winter months. It is not a venue that hosts international fixtures, but for a local club that plays at this level it provides everything required.
