Halle Polyvalente

The Halle Polyvalente d'Istres does not look like a cathedral for sport. It is a modest hall, open since 1982, built by the Municipality of Istres to serve the local population. It does not pretend to be anything else.

Inside, the space is dominated by the sports floor, a multi-purpose surface that changes character depending on the sport. During the handball season, the hall belongs to Istres Provence Handball, which plays in the LNH Division 1. The court is lined with temporary barriers for the crowd, and the atmosphere shifts from a quiet morning practice to a tense match.

Capacity is not a fixed point here. For volleyball tournaments, the space fills to capacity, though the numbers vary between sources. For handball, the seating is tighter, and the crowd is turned to the kids watching from the sidelines. The venue also hosts concerts and other community events, but the handball fixtures remain the anchor of its calendar. The floor is not grass or turf, but a synthetic sol sportif that requires regular renewal.
