Hansehalle

Lübeck, Germany

Turnhalle
Turnhalle Anjalorenz · CC0

The Hansehalle sits in the St. Lorenz-Nord district of Lübeck.

It opened in 1963, which means it has seen the city change without being rebuilt from scratch. The architect is not recorded, but the hall was expanded in the mid-1990s by Ulrich Schünemann, so the modern glass extension is not a coincidence. The capacity is 3,200, but the fixed seats only number 2,114. The rest is standing room.

The surface is synthetic, a mix of concrete, PVC and parquet. The hall is the home of the handball club VfL Lübeck-Schwartau, who play in the second division. They are not the only ones. The floor has held the German Table Tennis Championships and the Futsal Cup Final Four. It has also hosted boxing matches, including bouts for Vitali Klitschko.

The name is Hansehalle, though fans call it Hansehölle.
