The ground sits at the foot of the rock Hásteinn, which gives the pitch its name. It is one of the oldest football stadiums in Iceland, having been opened in 1912. The playing surface is natural grass, and there is no evidence of undersoil heating.

No major incidents or large-scale concerts have been recorded at the venue, although the island was affected by the 1973 Eldfell volcano eruption. Icelandic Cup finals are traditionally held at Laugardalsvöllur in Reykjavík, not here.
