Kingsmead Stadium
Durban, South Africa
Formerly: Sahara Stadium
The ground sits in the Kingsmead district of Durban. It opened in 1923, making it one of the older venues in South Africa, and the original main grandstand still stands against the newer structures added during the 1980s. The capacity holds 25,000 spectators, and the traditional grass terracing remains a defining feature of the layout rather than being replaced by modern seating.
The pitch is natural grass, cut short and maintained for cricket. The stadium has hosted 46 Test matches, along with numerous One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. It is the home of the Dolphins cricket team and, more recently, Durban's Super Giants, who joined the SA20 league in 2023.
The address places it firmly within the suburb, with Kingsmead Way running past the entrance. Unlike football grounds in Durban that have disappeared or been rebuilt for wider purposes, this venue has kept its identity as a cricket-only site. The Moses Mabhida Stadium took over from the old football Kingsmead after it was demolished, but this ground has carried on through decades of change.
