The arena was built to replace the previous Palais des Sports de Metz, which was destroyed by fire in March 1999. Construction began in late 1999 and the venue was inaugurated on February 7, 2002. It was designed by architects Paul Chemetov, Borja Huidobro, and Jean-Claude Cadoux and constructed by the firm Demathieu & Bard. It has not had any former official names; it was built as Les Arènes.
The official seating capacity is 4,700 (some sources cite 4,500 or up to 5,000 for concerts, but 4,700 is the standard sports figure). The floor surface is wooden parquet (parquet), suitable for handball, basketball, and tennis. It is not a grass or artificial surface.
The primary tenant is Metz Handball (women's team, the 'Dragonnes'), one of the world's most successful handball clubs. It also hosts matches for ASPTT Metz (basketball and men's handball) and the Open de Moselle tennis tournament. It is not the home of FC Metz (football), which plays at Stade Saint-Symphorien.
A notable attendance record was set on May 19, 2013, when 4,576 spectators attended the French Championship final return leg between Metz Handball and Fleury Loiret. Other notable events include concerts by Arctic Monkeys (2012), Kyo (2001), and Patrick Bruel (2013), as well as the 2022 Tournoi de France volleyball tournament.
