The ground on Mayfield Road sits in the shadow of its own name. For years it was the KT Stadium, a nod to chairman Keith Tuckey, before the phoenix club bought out the old name and called it the Mayfield. The postcode puts it in Surrey, but the borough has been London since long before the club returned in 2014. This is the quieter side of the sport, where a fire in 2013 cleared out the clubhouse and left them running from a borrowed port-a-kabin until the rebuild finished.

What remains is the pitch itself. It is a natural grass surface that holds the shape of a proper oval, complete with hurdles stacked near the sidelines and flags set out for regional meetings. The stands are open, the capacity is 3,000, and the crowd never fills it. The record of 1,262 belongs to a play-off final against AFC Whyteleafe in 2026, a match that looked bigger on paper than it felt on the day. Most weekends the ground shares the stage with Balham FC, who bring their own supporters and their own problems.

The club was saved when a consortium including Stormzy and Wilfried Zaha stepped in, but money does not change the smell of the changing rooms or the way the rain hits the track. What is different here is the patience. The original Croydon Athletic fell apart in 2011, the owner ended up in prison, and the players had to find a new home. They found it here, on the same patch of earth that had hosted them for decades. The name changed, the fire passed, and the supporters stayed. They keep knocking on the door of the Isthmian League, not because they expect to break through, but because there is nowhere else to go. The stadium is not a landmark. It is simply where they play.
