The structure in Kiel is defined by its origins. The steel framework was lifted from decommissioned aircraft hangars on the island of Sylt.

The name has changed several times since the opening. It was the Ostseehalle, then the Sparkassen-Arena, and later the Wunderino Arena before becoming the Merkur Ostseehalle. These shifts are part of the timeline, but the building itself remains the same. It has hosted ice hockey matches for the Kieler EHC and boxing events, including a Wladimir Klitschko title defence. Artists such as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath have played here, and the Holiday on Ice show has run since 1953.
