National Cricket Performance Centre
Loughborough, United Kingdom
Formerly: National Academy
The National Cricket Performance Centre is located on the campus of Loughborough University. Its distinction lies in what it houses rather than what it reveals from the outside. The facility was opened in 2003. The original name, the National Academy, remained until the Schofield Report prompted a rebrand in June 2007.
The structure is a study in function over form. Inside, the facility prioritises precision. The two outdoor grounds, known as the Haslegrave Cricket Ground, sit adjacent to the main building. These pitches are natural grass, but in June 2017 the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) installed a trial wicket using SIS Grass Hybrid technology. This combination of turf and synthetic reinforcement was the first of its kind in the world, designed to withstand heavy use without compromising the surface.
The indoor component is where the true divergence from a traditional stadium occurs. Rather than spectator seating, the space contains six full-length cricket lanes equipped with Hawk-Eye tracking technology. The outdoor grounds have hosted the Women's Cricket Super League, but the capacity remains unrecorded. The facility does not maintain a standalone website, operating instead as an integral part of the university’s sports infrastructure.
