Nybodahallen

There is an indoor hall in Tyresö that holds eight hundred people. It sits at the end of Pluggvägen 53. The floor is wood, and it is here that the local handball club has staged its matches.

Unlike the grand arenas of the capital, this place does not boast of history written in stone. It has simply existed since the late 1970s. The hall does not ask to be remembered for its opening year, nor for any major renovation that might have reshaped its structure. It is a working building, not a monument.

Visitors might confuse it with the Nybodadepån in Liljeholmen, a depot for buses and trains that once bore the name Brännkyrkahallen. That is a different beast entirely, one that churns out commuters rather than goals. Here, at Nybodahallen, the action is quieter. The stands are close to the court, and the sound of shoes on timber carries further than it ought to. It is a modest space, but it has hosted games in the Allsvenskan, the top tier of Swedish women’s handball. On a February evening in 2021, Tyresö IF faced Hammarby IF HF within these walls, playing in driving rain that never touched the roof because the roof kept the weather out.

There is nothing special about the lighting, or the changing rooms, or the way the light falls across the benches. The capacity is fixed at eight hundred, a number that fits the room without crowding it. The surface is natural wood, maintained as it always has been. No one can say for certain when the doors first opened, and no one cares enough to look it up. What remains is the sound of the ball and the cheer of the few who came to watch.
