Pantami Stadium

The Pantami Stadium is a sports ground on a street where, on a quiet afternoon, a pool table is set up outside the gate. The main stand is the most permanent feature, though the motorbikes parked in the dirt lot in front suggest that the space belongs to the city as much as to the game. The entrance archway bears the weight of the new identity, having been renamed from the Gombe Township Stadium to honour Isa Pantami. The pitch itself is artificial turf, a synthetic layer that does not need the same care as natural grass but does not look like one either. The surface was laid down during the major reconstruction that reopened the venue in 2010, an occasion marked by the presence of the former Nigerian international Nwankwo Kanu. The original stadium that stood on this site before the rebuild is not part of the current memory of the place. The two local clubs, Gombe United and Doma United, use the ground as their home, and their rivalry produces the only record-breaking crowds. The stadium serves a wider purpose than just football. It has hosted political rallies for the All Progressives Congress, including a visit by the presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, and the inauguration of the governor for his second term. It has also been a site of tragedy; in 2015, a suicide bomber detonated an auto bomb close to the perimeter during a campaign event, killing five people. The security wall is a reminder of that day as much as a boundary for the match.

Capacity is listed at 12,000, though the last full house was for the Savannah Derby against Doma United in 2023.
