Parkettshús

It is not a cathedral of sport, but it is the only one its town has. Íþróttahöllin á Akureyri sits on Skólastígur. Built in 1982, the hall has watched the town change while the parquet floor beneath the players’ feet has remained exactly the same.

Locals call it Parkettshús, which translates to "Parquet House." It is not an official title. The capacity is 1,110. In these games, the table goes out of the window; the noise travels from the stands to the court in a straight line.

When the 1995 World Men's Handball Championship came through, the hall tightened things up for the international guests. It hosted matches then, and it hosts matches now. Akureyri Handboltafélag plays here, and the relationship between the club and the city is built on this floor. The facility does not promise glamour; it promises a game that will not stop until the whistle blows.

There are no grand renovations to write about, no new roof added for tourist appeal. It opened in 1982 and has stayed open since. The wooden surface is natural, rough enough to test a player’s balance and soft enough to save their knees. A sell-out crowd here means the doors are full, not that the town has evacuated. It is a place for handball, nothing more, nothing less.

The light comes from windows high up on the walls, cutting through the dust motes that dance above the court. Visitors often forget the date of the opening, but the players remember the creak of the floorboards. It is a functional space in a functional town. If you look for a miracle, you will not find it here. If you look for a game, you will find it every Saturday night.
