The Pavilhão Flávio Sá Leite is a modern block of white concrete, its clean lines standing out against the older stone of the surrounding pavement. Inside, the air changes. The synthetic parquet floor was laid down to suit the demands of handball, a surface that allows for the rapid changes of direction that the sport requires. The capacity is modest, creating a sense that the players are performing for a family rather than a crowd. This proximity explains the nickname that has stuck over the years: the Cathedral of Handball . It is not a description of the architecture, but of the sound that rises from the stands when the ball hits the back of the net. The arena owes its name to a local boy who died far too young. The pavilion was named for him, a permanent tribute in a city where the club has been the centre of gravity for decades. The ground has seen its share of history, most notably when ABC Braga reached the final of the European Champions League in 1994. They played against giants like USAM Nîmes in these very halls, proving that a small club from northern Portugal could hold its ground on the continent. The building is now set to change again. For now, however, the floor remains the same, and the atmosphere still carries the weight of its past.
