Pavilhão Municipal da Póvoa de Varzim
Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal
The Pavilhão Municipal da Póvoa de Varzim is an indoor space, closed off from the Atlantic wind that sweeps through the town. Inside, the floor is artificial, a synthetic surface that has seen more handball and futsal than any other sport. The capacity is 2,327, a number that is small for a football club but sufficient for indoor sports.
The arena is not just a quiet hall for local matches. It has become the centre for Boccia in Portugal, hosting the World Boccia Cup in July 2024 and attracting athletes from 25 countries. The city is the capital of the sport, and the pavilion is the stage. The fixtures are dense; in May 2025, the venue will hold the 11th edition of the Hip Hop International competition, drawing around 10,000 spectators for a dance event that has nothing to do with the handball teams that call the place home.
It is a building that does not pretend to be a temple. It is a room with a roof, a floor, and seats. When the lights go down and the floor is cleared, the city fills it.
