Phoenix-Contact-Arena
Lemgo, Germany
Formerly: Lüttfeldhalle, Lipperlandhalle
The Phoenix-Contact-Arena in Lemgo is a building that does not look like a cathedral.
The ground is a parquet floor, polished and hard underfoot, which tells you immediately that this is not a football pitch. The game played here is handball, and the stands rise steeply on either side, packed tight with yellow and black. The local club, TBV Lemgo, has been playing here since the building was first a school gymnasium in 1977. They have stayed, and the building has grown around them. The original hall was called the Lüttfeldhalle, a name that vanished after the district expanded the seating and rebranded it the Lipperlandhalle. The capacity has swelled over the decades, reaching nearly five thousand spectators now, though the matches rarely feel crowded.
The arena is owned by the district and runs on a budget that feels tight. It shares its space with everything from trade fairs to concerts, and at one point it even served as a vaccination centre for the region. The stadium has a roof, but it does not feel enclosed. The air moves freely, and the noise from the crowd stays inside. Since 2018 the building has carried the name of an electrical engineering company, but the signboards on the walls still show older sponsors, remnants of a time when the hall was just a local hall. It is a building that has lived through several lifetimes, changing its face while keeping the same floorboards.
