Planet Ice Coventry

Planet Ice Coventry holds a different place in the city from the old municipal arenas that have closed. It opened in October 1999 as part of the Skydome Leisure World complex. The building was designed by Space & Place for Rank Entertainment.

The structure is defined by its scale. The main hall sits above an Olympic-sized rink (60m x 30m) cooled by an ammonia-based system. The venue became the home of the Coventry Blaze in the 2000–01 season, bringing a professional franchise from Solihull. The team has played there ever since, serving as the anchor for the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) in the region.

The venue hosted the WWE Raw show in November 2005, drawing 3,500 spectators, and later held the WWE NXT UK tour in 2019. It also staged a FIBA European Championship qualifier between England and Italy in 2002, alongside concerts by UB40 and bouts for TNA Wrestling. The ice hockey attendance record stands at 2,500, set during the 2002–03 playoff final against the Cardiff Devils and matched in January 2017 against the Edinburgh Capitals.

Ownership has shifted several times since opening. The property group Mansford acquired the venue in 2011, followed by a £25m strategic investment announced the next year to update infrastructure. A separate £2m refurbishment of the exterior and atrium was completed by Oakland Built Environment in 2015. The building has seen its share of trouble, including a scaffolding collapse in March 2020 and a fatality in October 2022.
