Pramogų arena

Built in 2002, it arrived with a heavy cost: the roof collapsed under a winter snowfall before the doors even opened. The structure stayed, but the reputation for being a bit rough around the edges stuck for a while.

The surface inside is artificial ice, maintained by a system that pours and scrapes the rink daily. The room holds 2,500 people for a hockey match and stretches to 4,000 when the stands are pushed back for a concert. The capacity changes depending on what is happening, which means the atmosphere shifts along with the numbers. Hockey Punks Vilnius play their home games here, and the sound of the puck against the boards is the main noise you hear.

It is not the only ice rink in the city, but it is the one that has seen the most change. It was once called the Ice Palace, then Utenos pramogų arena, and finally settled on its current name. The owners changed, the equipment was upgraded, and the tenant teams moved on, but the building remained. The roof has not collapsed again, though the memory of the snow remains. It is a place where the game is played, not where it is remembered. The lights are bright, the air is cold, and the ice is hard.
