Rasadnik Hall

Construction finished in 1983, and the structure won a special award at the 1st Biennial of Macedonian Architecture in 1981. Its name, Rasadnik, still hints at that earlier life as a greenhouse.

For a long time, the hall was quiet. It housed RK Vardar, the city’s handball giants, and their volleyball counterparts, OK Vardar, on a wooden parquet floor. But the years brought neglect. From 2002 to 2023, the facility was leased to a private company, Imperial Danela. The management failed to meet requirements for a proposed hotel and pool, and the hall fell into disrepair, accumulating debts for rent and electricity. The municipality took back ownership in 2023, finding a space that needed more than just a fresh coat of paint.

In November 2024, a major reconstruction project began, funded by the Ministry of Sports. The work aimed to restore the hall to its former status as a home for youth sports and professional teams. The project was scheduled to last fifteen months. On June 11, 2026, the doors opened again. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and Minister of Sports Borko Ristovski attended the reopening, which featured a friendly handball match between RK Vardar and RK Vardar Veterans.

Now, the hall looks forward. It is scheduled to host the EHF Youth Handball 2026 tournament in August, bringing international competition back to the city centre. The wooden floor, restored and renewed, is ready for the next generation of players. The building stands as a reminder of Skopje’s architectural ambitions in the late seventies, now repurposed for the simple game of handball.
