RedStar Arena

Joondalup, Australia

Formerly: HBF Arena, Provident Financial Oval, Pentanet Stadium, HIF Health Insurance Oval

Arena Joondalup opened in 1994 as part of a wider development.

The most striking feature is the running track that cuts between the stands and the pitch. It is a red synthetic strip with green lanes, a relic of the venue's multi-purpose past when athletics sat alongside football. The stands are low and curved, painted in a sea of red seats that suggest a club with ambitions beyond the local league. On the far side, the word «LENNJE» stands out in white against the red, a piece of casual graffiti or perhaps a faded banner that has remained untouched.

Inside, the space is intimate. There is no grand roof spanning the entire bowl, only concrete cantilevers protecting the main stand. In one view, the sky is pale and overcast, offering a flat light that reveals the wear on the concrete steps. In another, the floodlights pierce a dark, rainy night, and the crowd swells into a sea of red and white, holding a large tifo banner that transforms the ordinary concrete into something resembling a fortress. The atmosphere was left exposed to the elements, but the fans weathered the storm.

It is a place where the game is played rather than performed. The surface is natural grass, kept green by the coastal climate, and the perimeter is lined with advertising boards for sponsors like Toyota and Nike. It is not a cathedral of football, but a working ground in the truest sense.
