Sportanlage Kreuzbleiche

Sportanlage Kreuzbleiche sits in St. Gallen, Switzerland, but does not host the city’s most famous football club. FC St. Gallen has always played at Espenmoos or Sitterstadion; here they trained in the 1880s, and that was all. The complex is better known for handball than for football. FC Fortuna St. Gallen operates out of the outdoor pitches, while the indoor hall, Sporthalle Kreuzbleiche, accommodates up to 4,200 people for international competitions.

The building was constructed between 1982 and 1984 by Heinrich Graf. It replaced an older site that had held the Swiss Gymnastics Festival back in 1922. The hall hosted Group B matches during the 1986 IHF World Men’s Handball Championship and hosted Group A matches for the 2006 European Women’s Handball Championship. It did not take part in the 2006 European Men’s Handball Championship.

The outdoor football pitch, often called Hauptplatz, holds 1,000 spectators and plays on natural grass. The indoor arena differs in scale and purpose. Some sources cite a lower capacity of 3,500 for specific handball events, though the official figure remains higher. The venue has not been rebuilt or significantly altered since its opening, and no former names have been recorded.

What sets the place apart is how it functions. It is not a temple of football, nor is it a landmark for tourists. It is a working sports complex, used daily by local clubs. The architecture is functional, the seating straightforward, and the atmosphere built around handball, not football.
