Sportcenter Markranstädt
Markranstädt, Germany
Sportcenter Markranstädt sits at Leipziger Straße 47, a functional hall in the Leipzig district of Saxony rather than a traditional football stadium. Opened in 2007 to replace older facilities, it is the largest ball sports hall in the region. Its wooden parquet surface serves handball and other indoor games, while the terraces provide seating for 1,384 spectators.
The venue’s history is defined by the SC Markranstädt e. V. women’s handball team, known as the "Piranhas." They played their home matches here from the 2000/01 season until their professional department faced insolvency in 2009. During those nine years, the hall hosted the 2. Bundesliga promotion play-off finals five consecutive times: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. The team lost in each final, facing opponents such as SVG Celle in 2009 and Frisch Auf Göppingen in 2008. These matches drew the largest crowds, though exact attendance figures are not documented. The facility remains distinct from the nearby Stadion am Bad, the outdoor football ground used by SSV Markranstädt and formerly by RB Leipzig.
Today the hall hosts HC Leipzig in lower leagues and local associations for badminton, table tennis, and volleyball. The City of Markranstädt owns the building, managed by the Markranstädter Bau- und Wohnungsverwaltungsgesellschaft mbH (MBWV). No standalone official website exists for the venue; information is hosted on the city’s site. It is a working space, not a monument.
