Sporthalle Eynatten

The Sporthalle Eynatten does not announce itself as a cathedral of sport, but it has been the place where HC Eynatten-Raeren found a way through to the top of Belgian handball. The hall sits at Lichtenbuscher Straße 24 in the district of Eynatten, tucked into the municipality of Raeren in the province of Liège. It is not a grand arena with tiers rising to the sky. The capacity is a matter of record, with French Wikipedia and historical league data pointing to 700, while Europlan-Online suggests 300; the discrepancy likely reflects different seating configurations rather than a change in the building itself.

What stands out is not the architecture but the continuity of the club’s success. The men’s team secured the Belgian First Division championship in three consecutive seasons: 2000, 2001 and 2002. Those victories happened within these walls. The hall is also used for badminton and other activities, including African dance, which gives the space a rhythm beyond the court. A regional tournament, the East Belgian Cup Eynatten, has been held here, bringing local competitors together in a setting that feels more like a community hall than a professional stadium.

There were moments when the building itself drew attention. In July 1997, the hall hosted the "Rock On 1997" festival, with bands such as DCS and PPz 30 playing to a crowd that filled the space. More recently, renovations added skylights and ceiling fans, improving the air and light for players and spectators alike. On the night of June 25, 2023, unknown individuals broke into the hall, forcing open doors to several rooms. No items appeared to be stolen, but the incident left the club to secure its own space. The building remains in use, awaiting a new hall planned for completion around 2028, but for now, it serves as the home for a club that knows what it means to play on its own ground.
