Sporthalle Neuplanitz

The Sporthalle Neuplanitz holds a quiet place in the German handball landscape. Built in 1982 for the Neuplanitz district of Zwickau, the hall is a functional space for the Zwickauer HC Grubenlampe and local youth teams. It has a capacity of 890 seats.

For decades, the hall served as the anchor for the women’s handball team, BSV Sachsen Zwickau. The relationship lasted from the early 1990s until the summer of 2024. When the team earned a special permit to play in the 1. Bundesliga Frauen, the stands were close, the noise was contained, and the volume of fans far outstripped the official numbers. In the final season, the team averaged 610 spectators, a figure that suggests the hall was never empty on a matchday.

The proximity matters. It creates an intensity that larger arenas lose. When a team like Werder Bremen visited, the crowd swelled beyond the hall’s limits, filling corridors and doorways. The history between the city and the sport adds an edge that a modern stadium cannot replicate. The hall became a place where the community felt it owned the game, even when the players represented the country.

That chapter closed when the team moved to the larger Stadthalle Zwickau for the 2024/25 season. The Sporthalle Neuplanitz remains. It stands as a reminder of a time when a town could pack a room to the rafters for a sport that did not yet have a national stage. The building is unremarkable, but the memory of the fans who refused to stay away is not.
