Sportshal Elzenhagen

The Sportshal Elzenhagen is tucked into the Elzenhagen Zuid neighbourhood in Amsterdam-Noord. The hall itself was built in 1970 with a ten-year lifespan.

The original building was stripped of asbestos and fitted with LED lighting during a long renovation that began in 2013, yet it remained in place for another decade before demolition. The new hall, designed by LIAG Architecten, opened in 2023. The difference is not just in the steel and concrete, but in the surface beneath the feet. Where the old floor was fixed, the new one is a configurable LED surface, capable of shifting from handball lines to indoor football markings with a flick of a switch.

There is no independent website for the venue; the municipality handles everything through its Sportverhuur platform, a bureaucratic thread that ties the building to the city rather than to a specific club. This reflects the nature of the space. It is not a fortress for a single team, but a tool for the community. The handball club S.V. Vriendschap is the primary tenant, and their matches are played here, but so are the gymnastics sessions of Tonido and the school games of local children.

The capacity sits at 750, a number that matches the attendance record. It is not a figure that suggests a spectacle, but rather a room where the crowd is close enough to hear the squeak of trainers on the synthetic surface. It is a functional box, lit by modern LEDs, standing where a semi-permanent structure once decayed.
