The ground carries a weight that matches its skyline. It was opened in 1930 during the colonial period, originally known as the Stade Municipal. Over the decades it has been a home for CR Belouizdad, though the club also utilises the Nelson Mandela Stadium. The surface is artificial turf, a modern addition.
The stadium is also defined by what has happened to it. The most severe incident occurred on November 26, 1982, when a section of the roof collapsed during a derby, killing eight people and injuring hundreds. More recently, the venue faced tragedy again in August 2019, when a stampede at a concert and the subsequent collapse of a metal gate led to fatalities.
The architecture remains functional rather than grand. It is a ground that has seen its share of history, both celebrated and tragic, and continues to serve the city's football life.
