The ground is situated in a valley, with a distinct separation between the covered VIP areas and the open concrete seating. Behind the goal, an island rises from a lake, a quiet landscape feature that contrasts with the urban sprawl filling the valley floor.

The current structure is not the original. The site was once a modest oval track and field area before the post-independence era saw a larger concrete stadium rise. That version stood for decades until the decision to tear it down completely. Between 2019 and 2021, the ground was stripped back to the earth and rebuilt from scratch by a Chinese construction company. The result is a facility designed to meet modern standards, with a hybrid grass surface and automatic irrigation hidden beneath the turf, though the visual impression remains one of raw concrete and open sky.

This is the home of the national football team, known locally as the Barea. The name was changed during the rebuild to Kianja Barea Mahamasina, meaning "the people's place," a title that reflects the stadium's role as a gathering point for the capital. It has hosted major regional tournaments, including the Indian Ocean Games, and critical African Cup of Nations qualifiers. The capacity has been expanded significantly to nearly 41,000 seats, though the atmosphere is often defined not by the numbers in the stands but by the tension of the match itself.
