Stadion FK Brodarac
New Belgrade, Serbia
Formerly: Stadion na Starom sajmištu
The ground remembers the tower. The football pitch was poured in its place. The club that calls it home, FK Brodarac, was founded in 1947, only a year after the demolition.
The surface is synthetic, installed in August 2015. That upgrade means the matches can be played in the dark. Evening fixtures are common now, and the floodlights keep the game going when the Belgrade winter sets in. The club has no other option; FK Dedinje plays here too because they have nowhere else to go.
The history on this site is heavy. When the new authorities took over, they did not preserve the old structures. The club was originally part of a larger sports society, the 'Brodograditelj' group, before becoming independent in 1949. The sponsors at the time were shipping and dredging companies, fitting for a port city.
Those matches against Manchester United were played here, on this same patch of ground. The atmosphere was different then, but the physical space remained unchanged. The artificial turf has held up through the seasons, holding every card through the rain and the mud.
