Stadion Kantrida
Rijeka, Croatia
Formerly: Campo Sportivo Olimpia, Stadio Borgomarina, Stadio Comunale del Littorio
The ground sits in a depression cut out of the hillside. The view from the terraces looks out over the water, a feature that defines the atmosphere more than the concrete and steel surrounding the pitch. The seating area is a mix of old and new, with chairs arranged on concrete steps that curve around the field.
The history here is layered. The site began as a stone quarry before the local club developed it in the early twentieth century. Political shifts over the decades brought a series of changes to the name, reflecting the changing administration of the city. The current name, Stadion Kantrida, dates back to the years following the war. Safety regulations forced the removal of standing terraces, altering the dynamic of the crowd.
The club has called this place home since the mid-1940s, though they have played elsewhere in recent years while plans for a new complex are discussed. The national team also found success here, remaining unbeaten in international fixtures played within these boundaries.
