Sydney Cricket Ground
Sydney, Australia
Formerly: Garrison Ground, Civil and Military Ground, Association Ground
It is defined by the way it accommodates different sports on the same natural grass. The pitch is flat and green, but the surrounding infrastructure shifts depending on the game played there.
The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) presents a different face depending on who is playing. When the Sydney Swans arrive for an Australian Football League match, the perimeter advertising boards close in, and the lighting towers rise higher above the playing area. The crowd packs tighter into the stands, and the atmosphere changes from the measured silence of cricket to something more frantic. The stands themselves are a patchwork of old and new; the curved roof of the Dally Messenger Stand sits alongside the older concrete structures without trying to hide the difference.
That history sits beneath the modern scoreboard.
The capacity has shifted over time, settling around 48,000 for cricket events after a major redevelopment finished in 2014. That rebuild replaced the older stands with modern seating, but it kept the general shape of the bowl. The ground is not the home of the city’s football team or its rugby league club, a fact that often confuses visitors. The wind moves freely through the open ends of the stadium, carrying sound across the pitch, whether it is the murmur of a cricket test or the roar of a football final.
