Teesdale Park

Teesdale Park sits on Acklam Road in Thornaby, a district of Stockton-on-Tees. The ground has never pretended to be anything other than what it is: a local football pitch with a heavy engineering past. It was once the Head Wrightson Athletic Ground, where the company fielded a football team alongside its cricket and athletic pursuits. The club playing there now, Thornaby F.C., took its current name in 2000, following a series of rebrands that trace back to the original Stockton FC.

What makes the place different from the identical ground down the road is its history. The redevelopment between 2015 and 2019 added a main stand with roughly 100 seats and covered standing areas, but the structure remains modest. The capacity is 5,000, a figure that has not changed despite the new fencing and upgraded floodlights.

The club’s reach extends beyond the immediate area. A North Riding Senior Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough FC’s Under-21 side drew 220 spectators in March 2016, showing the ground can attract attention when the fixture demands it. But more recent events have kept the ground in the news for other reasons. An arson attack destroyed the main clubhouse in June 2023, and a vote to axe the women’s and youth sections led to board resignations in June 2024 before the decision was overturned.

It is a place for local football, where the game is played close to the pitch and the crowd is often small.
