The Aquatherm Stadium

The long shelter along the touchline at Salters Lane does not look like much of a fortress. The surface is synthetic.

The venue is known as the Aquatherm Stadium. The name has changed more than once, following the financial ups and downs of the club itself. The facility remained open after the club collapsed, saved by volunteers and local businessmen who rebuilt the changing rooms and stood up the stands.

It is a place where the boundary between the community and the game is thin. The capacity is listed at 2,500, but the away end rarely fills beyond a hundred seats. The stands are low, meaning a visitor in the dugout can see the faces of those watching from the terraces. The floodlights are high and bright, casting long shadows when the sun goes down and the match continues into the evening.

There is nothing grand about the architecture here. The building behind the main stand is a simple block with a few windows, housing the offices and changing rooms. Visitors arrive through the gate at the end of the lane, walking past the same advertisements that have hung on the perimeter since the club began to grow again. It is a semi-professional stage, modest in scale but sturdy in its purpose.

The ground has seen nights when the floodlights failed, forcing a replay against a higher-league side. It has also hosted victories over teams that play in the National League, moments that seem larger than the concrete and grass beneath them. Yet the stadium itself remains unchanged. The roof remains the same, the surface the same, and the silence between the matches the same.
