The ground sits in a dip, a natural hollow that the sources describe as possibly formed from salt-making spoil. You walk down into it. The stadium itself reflects that. The Philcox Terrace behind the west goal is a simple covered bank, and the Rookery Stand, which replaced the old wooden South Stand in 2007, is a modest all-seater block. The rest of the perimeter is defined by a grass bank and the Ham Lane End, an uncovered terrace on the east side.

The site has a long history, having hosted recreational cricket since 1730, though the football club has only been there since 1885. The club moved to this specific spot after a brief period at the adjoining Convent Field. The ground developed incrementally rather than being designed by a single architect. Most of the modern infrastructure was added to meet the ground grading requirements for the Conference National, achieving an "A" grade in 2009. The club, which transitioned to community ownership in 2010, has used the facility for more than just local matches.

The women's side has drawn significant attention. In December 2018, a crowd of 1,954 gathered for a match against Manchester United Women. That figure was eclipsed in March 2023 when the FA Cup quarter-final brought 2,801 spectators to the ground. The match was broadcast live on BBC iPlayer.

A charity match in November 2024 brought former professionals to the site, but the ground remains a quiet place for the club. The pitch is natural grass, and the club opened a separate floodlit 3G artificial pitch next to the main field in 2015.
