TIWAG Arena

The TIWAG Arena in Innsbruck is located in the Pradl district, tucked away in the Olympiaworld complex.

Architect Wolfgang Rang designed the place, and the 15 months of construction left a building that looks practical rather than picturesque. It sits among the concrete and steel of the Olympiaworld complex, tucked away in the Pradl district. You drive down Olympiastraße and you find it; there is nothing particularly distinctive about the exterior, which is perhaps the point. It is an ice rink, not a cathedral.

Inside, the artificial ice sits on a concrete slab, cooled by a system that processes rainwater. It is a technical solution, not a romantic one. The stands rise up from the rink, terraced and fixed, holding 3,000 people comfortably. When the ice hockey team, HC TIWAG Innsbruck, plays here, the noise stays in the roof. They call themselves Die Haie, and the fans watch from the stands that were added during the 2022 expansion, giving the home side a slight advantage when the opposition tries to pin them back.

The name changes tell a story of sponsorship rather than sentiment. It began as the Tiroler Wasserkraft Arena, then became the TIWAG Arena after the local water power company stepped in. The old name still lingers in the minds of those who watched the 2005 tournament, but the building does not care about nostalgia. It does its job.

It has hosted the Winter Youth Olympics and the ice hockey world championships, but most weeks it is just a hockey arena. The wind goes straight through the city outside, but here the air is still and cold.
