UTS Stadium

Gateshead, United Kingdom

Formerly: Federation Park

UTS Stadium sits on Wellington Road. It feels less like a destination and more like a continuation of the town itself. The ground does not announce its presence with grandstands or turning wheels; it simply exists.

The place carries the weight of its own history without shouting it. When the gates first swung open in August 1988, the concrete was still wet, and the crowd gathered for a match managed by Willie McFaul. For twenty years, it was known as Federation Park. Then, in June 2009, the name changed to UTS Stadium, following a sponsorship deal that mirrored the club’s own evolution from Dunston Mechanics to Dunston UTS FC. The name shift was practical, not ceremonial. The stadium does not care what you call it.

The capacity is small, barely enough to hold a full day’s shift workers. The record attendance of 2,520 came on a cold October afternoon in 2018, during an FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round match against Gateshead. That crowd was not there for spectacle. They were there because the cup run mattered, because their team had worked the channels to reach that stage, and because one mistake ends it. The away end never stopped, even when the result was decided long before the final whistle.

Today, the pitch is maintained with the same care as the town’s other public spaces. Visitors come for friendlies or cup ties, but they mostly leave. The ground is not built for tourism. It is built for the week’s work, for the players who train here when the wind blows straight through the open sides, and for the fans who sit on the cold concrete benches and watch the rain fall on the grass. There is no website of its own, no digital presence beyond the club’s own page. It is what it has always been: a football ground in Gateshead, nothing more, nothing less.
