Zimní stadion Opava

The arena presents a architectural split. The original 1950s concrete and steel roof structure has been preserved through the recent reconstruction, but the interior is entirely new. This juxtaposition defines the venue.

Originally opened in 1956 as the third covered ice arena in Czechoslovakia, the ground has served the city of Opava for decades. It was built to replace a natural ice rink that had stood on the site since 1858. The facility is home to HC Slezan Opava, who play in the Czech 2. Liga. The club once competed in the top-tier Czech Extraliga from 1996 to 1999, a period when the stadium held more than 5,500 spectators.

The current iteration is the result of a major reconstruction that ran from May 2023 to June 2026. The project, costing over 450 million CZK, demolished the old interior to create a more intimate space. The capacity was reduced to just under two thousand seats, a figure the city administration considers sufficient for the current league levels. The new facility features artificial ice and is designed for multi-purpose use, including public skating and cultural events.

The address is Zámecký okruh 413/8. The commercial name Slezan Aréna is used to reflect the club’s tenancy, though the official registered name remains Zimní stadion města Opavy.
