Zimní stadion Ostrava-Poruba

The RT TORAX ARENA presents a distinct profile on the streets of Poruba. It is not a grand cathedral of sport, but a functional building that has changed shape at the break over the decades.

The site tells a story of practicality rather than permanence. Originally opened as an open-air rink in 1977, the ground felt the pressure of time and weather until a major reconstruction around 1998 turned it into a fully enclosed hall. That transformation was not without drama; the facility was forced to close briefly due to a hazardous ammonia leak in the cooling system, a problem that has required attention again more recently. The roof, visible in every view of the building, was not added until 1992, shielding the ice from the elements only after the initial years of operation.

Today, the arena serves as the home for HC RT Torax Poruba and has also hosted visitors from the top tier of Czech hockey, including HC Vítkovice Ridera. The capacity sits at 4,200, a reduction from the 5,000 it held during its peak years. The building’s location, marked by the address Čkalovova 6144/20, places it firmly within the residential fabric of the district. It hosts a variety of events beyond ice hockey and concerts, but the identity of the place remains tied to its primary function as a multi-purpose ice surface.
