About

The Brisbane Premier League (BPL) was a senior association football competition based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Founded in 1983 by the Queensland Soccer Federation (QSF), it replaced the previous Queensland State League structure. The league operated under this name until 2021. Following an administrative takeover by Football Queensland and a restructuring of the state pyramid, it was rebranded as the Football Queensland Premier League 3 – Metro (FQPL 3 Metro).

The competition is currently positioned at Step 5 nationally and Step 4 within Queensland. It sits below the National Premier Leagues Queensland (NPL QLD) and the Football Queensland Premier League 1 & 2. The league is administered by Football Queensland Metro. It typically features 12–13 clubs, including Bayside United, Carina, Centenary Stormers, Ipswich Knights, Mt Gravatt, and Newmarket.

The season format consists of a double round-robin regular season followed by a finals series for the top four teams to determine the champion. Promotion exists to FQPL 2, while relegation drops teams to FQPL 4. Historically, the BPL was the top-tier Brisbane competition until 2007, then became the second tier, and later the third or fourth tier as the NPL structure expanded.

The league is distinct from the NPL Queensland as a lower-tier, semi-professional and development pathway. The competition's roots trace back to the Anglo-Queensland Football Association, established in 1884 by Scottish immigrants, but the specific BPL entity began in 1983. Recent years have shown varied winners, with no single club dominating the historical title count in the provided sources. The competition serves as a crucial link in the regional football hierarchy for the Brisbane area.
