The Campeones Cup is a single-match supercup contested between the top clubs of Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX. Organised as a bilateral exhibition, it pits the MLS Cup champion against the winner of the Mexican Campeón de Campeones. The fixture operates entirely outside the domestic league pyramids and carries no sporting consequence for league standings or continental qualification. Instead, it serves as a ceremonial highlight reinforcing the strategic alliance between the two North American leagues.
Founded in 2018, the tournament initially launched at BMO Field in Toronto. The inaugural meeting saw Tigres UANL defeat the host side Toronto FC 3–1. Following that start, the event became an annual autumn fixture, typically scheduled for late September or early October. Matches follow a standard knockout structure: ninety minutes of regular play, followed by extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout to determine a victor. The 2020 edition did not take place due to the global pandemic.
Recent history shows a rotation of winners across both nations. Tigres UANL claimed the title in 2018 and again in 2023, holding the record for most victories. Atlanta United FC won in 2019, Columbus Crew in 2021, and New York City FC in 2022. Club América lifted the trophy in 2024, while Toluca secured the 2025 edition. The competition distinguishes itself from the larger Leagues Cup tournament and the continental CONCACAF Champions Cup by focusing solely on the reigning league champions rather than a broad field of participants.
The tournament’s symbolic value is tied to the broader cooperation between MLS and Liga MX, including their joint bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Participation is limited to the specific club winners each season, ensuring a high-profile clash between the respective premier teams.
