The CONCACAF Women's U-20 Championship operates as the primary developmental pathway for the confederation's under-20 age group. Founded in 2002, the tournament serves as the official qualification route for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. It is held biennially, usually in even-numbered years, to align with the global cycle for youth football.

The final tournament features eight teams competing in a round-robin group stage. The two highest-ranked nations on the CONCACAF U-20 ranking secure automatic berths, while the remaining six places are determined through a preliminary qualification phase involving a larger pool of member associations. The top two sides from each group advance to the semi-finals and final. Participation is based on ranking and qualification rather than a promotion or relegation system.

The United States stands as the most successful nation in the competition's history with seven titles. Canada follows with three victories, including the most recent edition in 2025, where they defeated Mexico 3-2 in extra time. Mexico has claimed two championships, in 2018 and 2023. The tournament was originally known as the U-19 Championship before undergoing reforms, including a 2020 format change that excluded hosts from the championship itself to allow direct World Cup qualification.

This event is distinct from the senior CONCACAF W Championship and the Women's U-17 Championship due to its specific age bracket and its exclusive role as the continental qualifier for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
