About

The DFB-Pokal der Junioren stands as the premier national knockout cup for U19 teams in Germany. Founded in 1987 by the German Football Association (DFB), the tournament sits alongside the senior men’s DFB-Pokal as the country’s main youth cup. It currently comprises 32 clubs, drawing participants from both professional academies and amateur youth sides. The field is split into two distinct groups: 21 spots come from regional association cup winners, while 11 places are reserved for high-performing squads from the A-Junioren-Bundesliga. This structure ensures that local clubs can compete directly against elite professional youth teams.

The competition follows a strict single-elimination format. Every match is played as a single game with no replays. If the score remains level after 90 minutes, the result is decided by extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout. To balance the playing field, amateur youth teams are generally granted home advantage against professional academy sides. This rule adds a layer of unpredictability to the bracket. The final match takes place at a neutral venue, currently the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion in Potsdam. The event is traditionally scheduled one day before the conclusion of the senior men’s DFB-Pokal final.

SC Freiburg holds the record for most titles with six victories. VfB Stuttgart is second on the list with five wins, including the 2026 title. Recent champions include 1. FC Köln, TSG Hoffenheim, and SV Werder Bremen. Unlike the league-based A-Junioren-Bundesliga, which features only top academies, this cup allows amateur regional cup winners to enter the national stage. This format creates opportunities for smaller clubs to face established professional teams. The winner receives a trophy but does not gain promotion or qualification for the UEFA Youth League. The tournament replaced the Deutsche Jugendmeisterschaft as the primary national knockout event, though that championship tournament continues to operate separately.
