About

The EAFF E-1 Football Championship Qualification serves as the preliminary pathway for national teams seeking entry into the main East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) tournament. Established in 2003, the competition replaced the earlier Dynasty Cup and has operated continuously since the formation of the EAFF in 2002. It functions independently of national league structures as a regional international fixture for member associations.

The primary objective is to secure the final spot in the main championship. Japan, South Korea, and China qualify automatically for the four-team final stage. The remaining place is contested through the qualification bracket. The structure has adapted over time; while earlier iterations utilised two rounds with multiple teams, the 2025 edition introduced a simplified format. Teams are split into two groups, with the winner of each group progressing to a single-match final. This decisive game determines the sole qualifier for the main event.

Hong Kong holds a record of success within this stage. The nation has qualified for the finals in multiple editions, including 2003, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2025. In the previous cycle, Hong Kong secured their position by defeating Guam in the final match. Guam, Chinese Taipei, and North Korea also appear frequently among the participants.

The tournament operates on a biennial cycle. Participation is not governed by promotion or relegation but is determined by invitation or qualification results for each specific edition. The competition remains distinct from other Asian football pathways, such as AFC World Cup qualifiers, which cover the broader continent. The main championship title is currently held by Japan following the 2025 finals. The qualification stage does not carry a separate commercial sponsorship name.
