The SVB Eerste Divisie serves as the second tier of professional football in Suriname, operated by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond (SVB). Founded in 1924, the competition has undergone significant structural changes in recent years. In 2024, the SVB introduced the Suriname Major League as the new top-tier professional competition, demoting the Eerste Divisie to the second tier. Previously, the league operated under the name Hoofdklasse until 2016 and Topklasse until 2017, before adopting its current designation in 2017.
The league currently consists of 11 to 12 teams, including Broki, FC Inter Wanica, Flora, Inter Moengotapoe, Leo Victor, and Notch. The format is a double round-robin regular season comprising 30 games per team, played from November to June. Promotion to the Suriname Major League is determined via a promotion playoff among the top teams, while relegation occurs to the third-tier Lidbondentoernooi.
Historically, the league has been dominated by SV Robinhood and SV Transvaal, who hold 27 and 17 titles respectively. The 2023–24 season was marred by a match-fixing scandal involving Real Moengotapoe and TOK FC, leading to their expulsion and the crowning of Junior 2014 as champions. These reforms distinguish the Eerste Divisie as the top amateur/second-tier competition in the country.
