The FIFA Intercontinental Cup operates as a global club football tournament, structured to identify the premier annual world champion. It comprises two distinct historical phases: the original edition running from 1960 to 2004 and the current FIFA-sanctioned iteration launched in 2024. The modern competition serves as the elite annual world club title, distinct from the broader, quadrennial FIFA Club World Cup which is expanding to 32 teams.
The current format features six teams representing each of the six FIFA confederations. It utilizes a single-elimination knockout structure where the UEFA champion receives a bye to the final. The remaining five teams compete in preliminary rounds, including a 'Derby of the Americas' between the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL champions. The winners of these matches contest a 'Challenger Cup' semi-final before facing the European side in the deciding match.
Real Madrid won the inaugural 2024 edition by defeating Pachuca. Paris Saint-Germain claimed the 2025 title against Flamengo. In the original era, clubs such as AC Milan, Real Madrid, Peñarol, Boca Juniors, and Nacional shared the record with three wins each. The tournament replaces the role of the old version, which was sponsored by Toyota from 1980 to 2004 and discontinued in 2004, though FIFA officially recognized those historical winners as world champions in 2017. Both recent finals were held in Qatar.
The competition is defined by its exclusivity to continental champions and its annual frequency. It contrasts with the expanded Club World Cup by maintaining a smaller field of elite participants. The format ensures a direct path for the strongest confederation representative to the final, while others battle through qualifying stages. This structure highlights the hierarchy within global club football, positioning the Intercontinental Cup as the definitive annual championship event.
