Guangdong - Hong Kong Cup 2026/27

The Guangdong–Hong Kong Cup is an annual inter-regional football contest that pits a representative side from Guangdong Province against a side from Hong Kong. The fixture stands apart from the official domestic leagues and cups in either territory, operating instead as a unique cross-border event. It was established following an agreement signed in December 1978, with the inaugural matches taking place the following January. The tournament was proposed by Henry Fok, a prominent Hong Kong businessman who served as Chairman of the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA), and secured approval from the Chinese central government during the early Reform and Opening-Up period.

Organized jointly by the HKFA and the Guangdong Provincial Football Association, the competition follows a two-legged format featuring one home match for each participant. The victor is decided by the aggregate score, with extra time and penalty shootouts employed if the total remains level. This structure has seen minor adjustments over the decades, including the introduction of foreign player limits and the rotation of the Guangdong leg’s venue beyond Guangzhou. A separate Women's Cup was added to the programme in 2015.

As of the most recent edition, Guangdong holds a significant advantage in the historical record with 27 titles compared to Hong Kong’s 17. The northern team also maintains the record for the longest winning streak, securing four consecutive championships from 2023 to 2026. The tournament was suspended for three years during the pandemic before resuming. Beyond the results, the fixture serves as a symbolic sporting and cultural bridge between the two regions, maintaining its status as a distinct entity separate from standard domestic competitions.
