Lao League 1, currently branded as Pepsi Lao League 1, stands as the premier football competition in Laos. Organised by the Lao Football Federation, it operates at the summit of the national pyramid, sitting above the second-tier Lao League 2 and the Lao Women's League. The competition was established in 1990, with Lao Army FC securing the inaugural title. A significant rebranding occurred in 2020 when the tournament shifted from the Lao Premier League to its current name to align with international standards.
The 2025–26 campaign features ten clubs competing in a double round-robin format. Each side plays eighteen games, contesting both home and away fixtures. There are no group stages or play-offs for the championship; the winner is decided purely by final league standings. The structure includes automatic promotion and relegation. The bottom two teams drop directly to Lao League 2, while the top two from the second tier rise to the top flight. Relegation playoffs are not utilised.
Lao Army FC holds the record for the most titles, with seven or eight depending on the classification of shared championships. Their dominance was particularly evident in the early years between 1990 and 1997. More recent success has seen Lao Toyota FC claim five titles in the late 2010s, and Young Elephants FC win in 2022 and 2023. Ezra FC currently holds the crown after winning the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons. The league has experienced fluctuations in team numbers due to financial constraints, and the 2021 season was cancelled because of the pandemic.
Winning the league provides qualification for the AFC Challenge League and the ASEAN Club Championship. Laos does not currently have slots for the AFC Champions League Elite or AFC Champions League Two. While the Lao Prime Minister Cup is the main domestic knockout tournament, its victor does not secure Asian spots; that privilege belongs solely to the league champion.
