Ligue 1 serves as the premier football division in Algeria, operating as the top tier of the national league system. Established in 1962 following national independence, the competition replaced earlier regional structures to create a unified professional framework. The league is administered by the Ligue de Football Professionnel under the authority of the Algerian Football Federation.
The season follows a double round-robin format involving 16 clubs. Each team plays every other side twice, resulting in 30 matches per participant. This structure ensures a comprehensive contest across the campaign. The competitive stakes are high, with promotion and relegation mechanisms linking the top flight to the second tier.
Three teams are relegated to Ligue 2 at the end of the season. They are replaced by the top two finishers from the second division and a winner from a playoff. This system maintains fluidity between the levels of Algerian football. Success in the league yields significant continental opportunities. The champion qualifies for the CAF Champions League, while the second and third-place teams, along with the Algerian Cup winner, enter the CAF Confederation Cup.
The competition distinguishes itself from the Algerian Cup, which is a knockout tournament open to clubs from all levels of the pyramid. Ligue 1 remains a closed league for top-tier professional clubs. Notable reforms included the professionalization of the league in 2010, which also saw a name change from Championnat National 1. Commercial partners have included Nedjma and Mobilis, the latter sponsoring the competition since 2014.
JS Kabylie holds the record for the most titles with 14 wins, demonstrating historical dominance. MC Alger claimed the most recent championship in the 2024–25 season. These achievements highlight the competitive depth within the Algerian football hierarchy.
