About

The Malaysia Cup (Piala Malaysia) is a national football knockout tournament in Malaysia. Founded in 1921, it stands as the oldest national cup competition in Asia. The trophy was originally donated by the crew of the British Royal Navy battleship HMS Malaya, specifically Captain H. T. Buller, and the event was organized by the Selangor Club. Originally known as the Malaya Cup, it was renamed the Malaysia Cup in 1963 following the formation of the nation. The original trophy was retired in 1967.

The tournament sits in the Malaysian football pyramid as a major domestic cup, distinct from the league system. While the Malaysia Super League is the top-tier professional league, the Malaysia Cup is open to clubs from both the Malaysia Super League and the Malaysia Premier League. This open eligibility allows lower-division teams to compete against top-tier sides, serving as its primary distinction from the restricted league structure. For the 2025–26 season, 16 teams participate: 13 from the Malaysia Super League and 3 from the A1 Semi-Pro League. The tournament consists of a Round of 16, Quarter-finals, and Semi-finals played as two-legged ties, with the Final played as a single match.

Selangor FC is the most successful club in history with 33 titles. Johor Darul Ta'zim is the current champion, having won the 2025 edition by defeating Sri Pahang FC 2–1 in the final. Since the 2016 privatization era under the Malaysian Football League, the format has been a knockout tournament. The competition does not guarantee qualification for AFC continental tournaments, unlike the Malaysia FA Cup, which serves that purpose.
