The Malaysia Cup stands as the oldest national football cup competition in Asia, tracing its origins to 1921. Originally known as the Malaya Cup, the tournament was renamed in 1967. The prestigious trophy was donated by the British Royal Navy battleship HMS Malaya, marking a significant chapter in the region's sporting heritage. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) organizes the tournament, which operates separately from the league system.
This knockout tournament begins with a Round of 16. Quarter-finals and semi-finals are contested over two legs, featuring home and away matches, while the final is decided in a single match at a neutral venue, typically the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Unlike the Malaysia FA Cup, where the winner qualifies for the AFC Champions League Two, the Malaysia Cup winner does not receive automatic continental qualification. The competition features a broader historical eligibility compared to other domestic cups, having previously included state and military teams.
Selangor FA holds the record for the most titles with 33 victories. Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) is the current holder, having secured the 2024–25 edition after accumulating multiple titles in recent years. In the 2024–2025 season, 16 teams participated in the competition: 13 from the Malaysia Super League and 3 from the Liga A1 Semi-Pro, which sits at the third tier of Malaysian football. There is no promotion or relegation within the cup itself; qualification is determined by league standing.
The competition maintains a distinct identity from the professional league cup, offering a different pathway for success. While the structure remains consistent, the participants reflect the current hierarchy of Malaysian football. The tournament continues to serve as a major event in the sporting calendar, bringing together top-tier clubs and semi-professional sides in a traditional knockout format.
