About

The Philippine Football League stands as the premier professional football competition in the Philippines, operating under the authority of the Philippine Football Federation. Unlike many national leagues, it functions as a closed system with no promotion or relegation, a structure reinforced by the absence of an officially recognized second-tier national league. The competition replaced the United Football League, which had served as the de facto top tier before becoming defunct.

The format distinguishes the PFL from standard round-robin structures. The regular season employs a double round-robin system where each team plays 20 matches. This is followed by a split: the top six teams advance to a Championship round, while the remaining teams compete in a Classification round. This two-phase approach ensures that the title race remains competitive until the final stages of the season.

United City F.C. is the most successful club in the competition's history, having secured four titles between 2017 and 2020. Kaya–Iloilo follows with three championships, including the 2021 campaign and consecutive wins in 2022–23 and 2024–25. Manila Digger F.C. currently holds the title as the reigning champion of the 2025–26 season. The league differs significantly from the Copa Paulino Alcantara, a knockout tournament established in 2018 that features PFL clubs alongside guest teams.

The competition has undergone significant structural changes since its inception. It was founded in 2017 by the PFF through a National League Task Force. A notable period of instability occurred between 2018 and 2019 when the PFL was briefly dissolved and replaced by the Philippine Premier League, which folded after a single matchday. Club identities have also shifted frequently; for example, Ceres–Negros rebranded as United City F.C., and Davao Aguilas became Aguilas–UMak. These changes reflect the evolving landscape of professional football in the country.
